Medical Weight Loss
At Regen Wellness, we know maintaining a healthy weight is essential to living a healthy lifestyle overall.
What Is Medical Weight Loss?
Medical weight loss is a weight loss program run by a licensed provider instead of a diet book or an app. It starts with your health history and lab work, then combines supplement or prescription options, like GLP-1 medications, with nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle changes you can keep up.
According to the National Institutes of Health, excess weight raises the risk of many chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and sleep apnea. As we age, a slower metabolism and shifting hormones make it harder to lose. A clinician-guided plan looks for those underlying issues first, so you're not just fighting the scale. Curious how GLP-1s work? Read our article on semaglutide (Ozempic®) for weight loss.
Who It's For
Medical weight loss may be worth discussing with a provider if any of these sound familiar. Your provider reviews your history and labs to decide which approach, with or without medication, fits you.
Stubborn Weight After 35
The extra 25–30 lbs that crept on in adulthood and won't budge
Constant Hunger & Cravings
Doing the right things but fighting your appetite all day long
Blood Sugar Concerns
Prediabetes, insulin resistance, or type 2 diabetes alongside excess weight
Weight That Keeps Coming Back
Lost it on a diet or program before, only to regain it
Hormone-Related Weight Gain
Weight gain during perimenopause, menopause, or with low testosterone
Postpartum Weight
Baby weight that's lingered well past recovery, when you're ready to address it
Long-Term Health
For people who want to lower their risk of future health problems, not just fit into old jeans. A healthy weight can support blood pressure, blood sugar, joint comfort, and energy. The goal is a weight you can keep, with a plan built around your labs, nutrition, movement, sleep, and hormone care.
Individual results vary. Medical weight loss isn't right for everyone, and your provider will discuss risks and alternatives before prescribing anything. Weight and hormones are closely linked, and many patients pair their plan with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.
Why Clinician-Guided Weight Loss?
GLP-1s are now sold everywhere online, often after a quick questionnaire, with no lab work and little follow-up. That can mean the wrong dose, side effects nobody helps you manage, and muscle loss along with fat. Every weight loss plan at Regen Wellness includes:
- A licensed provider who reviews your history, labs, and medications
- Prescriptions filled by a licensed pharmacy
- Careful dose increases and help managing side effects
- Follow-up visits to track progress and adjust your plan
Rules for compounded GLP-1 medications have changed over the past year. We only prescribe what can be sourced legitimately today, and we'll tell you plainly what's available. Learn more about how the FDA regulates compounded medications.
A Plan That's More Than a Shot
Medication can quiet hunger, but lasting results come from the whole plan. Your customized plan includes specific actions in five areas of your wellness.
Therapies
GLP-1 medications, peptides, specialty IVs, and hormone support matched to your labs.
Nutrition
Realistic eating guidance and recipes, with enough protein to protect lean muscle.
Exercise
Workouts scaled to your fitness level and schedule, with a focus on strength.
Supplements
A customized supplement protocol to fill gaps from lower calories and your labs.
Mental Wellness
Support for stress, sleep, and emotional eating, the things that quietly stall progress.
Types of GLP-1 Medications
GLP-1 medications are once-weekly injections that help reduce appetite and cravings so you feel full on less. Newer versions act on more than one hormone pathway. Which one fits you depends on your labs, goals, history, and what can be prescribed safely and legally today.
Semaglutide
Single action: GLP-1
The active ingredient in brand-name Ozempic® and Wegovy®. Semaglutide works on the GLP-1 receptor, which helps regulate appetite and blood sugar. It has a long track record and is a common choice for steady, gradual weight loss.
Learn about semaglutideTirzepatide
Dual action: GLP-1 + GIP
The active ingredient in brand-name Mounjaro® and Zepbound®. Tirzepatide works on two receptors, GLP-1 and GIP, and has shown higher average weight loss than semaglutide in a head-to-head trial. It's often considered for insulin resistance.

Triple action: GLP-1 + GIP + glucagon
A next-generation medication that works on three hormone receptors instead of one or two. In the phase 3 TRIUMPH-1 trial, people on the highest dose lost about 28% of their body weight on average over 80 weeks. Retatrutide is still in clinical trials and not FDA-approved. Curious whether a triple-action option could fit your plan? Ask us on a free info call, and we'll walk you through where it stands and which options fit you today.

Common Questions
Who is a good candidate for medical weight loss?
GLP-1 medications are generally considered for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or prediabetes. You can check yours with the CDC's adult BMI calculator. Your provider confirms whether medication is appropriate after your consult and labs. If it isn't, we'll build a lifestyle and supplement plan instead.
What happens at my first visit?
You'll have a 30-minute new patient consult with our nurse practitioner and complete basic lab testing. You need to be established as a patient before starting semaglutide or tirzepatide, so your provider can dose safely and look for root causes. See our lab testing services.
How much weight can I expect to lose?
It depends on the medication, your starting point, and how closely you follow your plan. In large clinical trials, people averaged roughly 15% body-weight loss on semaglutide (STEP 1) and about 20% on tirzepatide (SURMOUNT-1) over about 68–72 weeks, alongside diet and activity changes. Your provider will set realistic expectations for you.
Are weight loss injections safe?
No treatment is risk-free. The most common side effects of GLP-1 medications are digestive, such as nausea, constipation, or diarrhea, and they often ease as your body adjusts or with a dose change. GLP-1s may not be appropriate if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, or have had pancreatitis. Your provider reviews your history before prescribing and monitors you throughout. This is general information, not medical advice.
Are these medications FDA-approved?
Brand-name semaglutide (Wegovy®) and tirzepatide (Zepbound®) are FDA-approved for chronic weight management. Compounded versions are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review compounded medications for safety or effectiveness before they're dispensed. The FDA explains more in its guidance on GLP-1 drugs used for weight loss. Your provider will explain exactly what you're being prescribed and why.
Do you offer retatrutide?
Ask us. Retatrutide is a triple-action medication that is still in clinical trials and isn't FDA-approved yet. Be cautious of products sold online as "research" retatrutide, which are of unknown quality. Book a free info call and we'll walk you through where retatrutide stands and whether tirzepatide or semaglutide fits your goals today.
How long will I need to stay on the medication?
It varies. Many patients stay on treatment for several months to a year or more. Once you reach your goal, your provider builds a maintenance plan, which may include a lower dose or tapering off, to help you keep the weight off.
Can hormones affect my weight?
Yes. Low testosterone, perimenopause, menopause, and thyroid issues can all make weight loss harder. We screen for these in your labs and can coordinate bioidentical hormone replacement therapy with your weight loss plan.
How much does medical weight loss cost?
Cost depends on the medication, dose, and length of your plan. Your first call is free, and your provider will give you a clear price before you commit to anything. We offer flexible payment options.
Do you offer virtual appointments?
Yes. We see patients in our Dallas clinic and virtually anywhere in Texas, with medication shipped to your door.
