What Is CIRS (Mold Illness)?

Chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) is a term for a long-lasting, body-wide inflammatory illness that some people develop after exposure to a water-damaged building. Damp buildings can contain mold, bacteria and the toxins they release. The term was introduced by Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker, MD, whose work suggests that some people's immune systems don't clear these toxins well, so symptoms continue long after the exposure.

CIRS is diagnosed from a pattern: a history of exposure, symptoms in several body systems at once, and specific test results. It is not yet recognized as a distinct diagnosis by most major medical organizations, and we explain what that means for you below. At Regen Wellness in Dallas, we evaluate patients for possible mold-related illness, rule out other causes and build a plan that starts with ending the exposure.

Common CIRS and Mold Illness Symptoms

The hallmark of CIRS is many symptoms across different body systems, often starting after a move, a leak or a new job. Dr. Shoemaker's checklist groups 37 symptoms into 13 clusters. These are the ones patients describe most often. Many have other causes too, which is why testing matters.

Energy & Sleep

Fatigue and weakness that rest doesn't fix, unrefreshing sleep, and feeling worse after exertion.

Brain & Mood

Brain fog, trouble concentrating, memory lapses, word-finding problems, headaches, anxiety and mood swings.

Muscles & Joints

Aches, cramps, morning stiffness and joint pain, sometimes moving from place to place.

Sinus, Lungs & Eyes

Sinus congestion, cough, shortness of breath, red or light-sensitive eyes and blurred vision.

Gut

Abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and new food sensitivities.

Nerves & Body Signals

Numbness or tingling, dizziness, night sweats, trouble regulating temperature, excessive thirst and frequent urination.

Mold Allergy vs. Damp-Building Illness vs. CIRS

"Mold illness" is used for several different things. Knowing which one fits helps decide what testing and care you need.

How establishedWell establishedWell established. Large reviews by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Institute of Medicine link damp buildings to these symptoms.Still debated. Most research comes from a small group of clinicians, and major allergy and medical societies don't recognize it as a distinct diagnosis.

We take all three seriously. Your symptoms are real whatever name they end up with, and the first step, ending the exposure, is the same for each.

How We Evaluate Mold-Related Illness

  1. Exposure history

Where you live and work, past leaks or flooding, musty smells, and when your symptoms began compared with any moves or water damage.

  2. Symptom review

A structured symptom checklist across body systems, plus your medical history and medications.

  3. Vision contrast sensitivity test

A quick, low-cost screening test of your eyes' ability to see contrast, which can be reduced in biotoxin illness. It's a screening tool, not a diagnosis. See our vision contrast sensitivity test.

  4. Lab testing

Standard labs to rule out other causes of your symptoms, such as thyroid, iron, B12, blood sugar and hormone problems, plus inflammation markers used in CIRS evaluations including MMP-9, TGF-beta-1, C4a and MSH.

  5. MARCoNS nasal testing

A deep nasal swab that checks for a hard-to-treat staph bacteria (MARCoNS) that some clinicians find in people with CIRS. If it's present, it becomes part of your plan.

  6. Home or workplace testing

We'll explain dust tests such as ERMI and HERTSMI-2 and when to bring in a certified mold inspector, so you know whether the building is still a problem.

Urine mycotoxin tests are widely marketed, but experts disagree on how to interpret them, because mycotoxins can come from food as well as buildings. If we use them, we'll explain their limits.

Our Approach to CIRS and Mold Illness Care

There's no single proven treatment for CIRS, so there's no one-size-fits-all protocol here either. Every plan is customized to your exposure history, test results, other health conditions and how you respond. Most plans draw on the steps below.

  • End the exposure first. Recovery is unlikely while you're still in the building that made you sick. We help you understand testing and remediation, and when temporarily moving out makes sense.
  • Prescription binders, if they fit you. We prescribe binders such as cholestyramine or colesevelam, which bind toxins in the gut so the body can remove them. Whether you take one, which one, and the dose and timing all depend on your results, other medications and how you tolerate it. They're used off-label for this purpose, and we monitor you while you take them.
  • Treat the sinuses and gut. If MARCoNS testing or your history shows an ongoing sinus or gut problem, which some clinicians believe keeps inflammation going, we address it as part of your plan.
  • A detox protocol for mold patients. Our mold detox protocol is tailored to each patient and coordinated with any binder you take, so the pieces work together rather than overlap.
  • Correct what the labs find. Low vitamin D, iron or B12, thyroid or hormone problems, and blood sugar issues are treated directly, because they cause many of the same symptoms.
  • Support recovery. Nutrition, sleep and gradual return to activity, with supplements only where there's a clear reason. Your provider will recommend specific products, and you can find the practitioner-grade options we use in the liver and detox collection at Regen Wellness Vitamins, our supplement store in the same suite.
  • Recheck and adjust. We repeat symptom checklists and labs to see what's improving.

When to Get Medical Care First

Seek urgent care for wheezing or shortness of breath that's getting worse, chest pain, fever, or coughing up blood.

People with a weakened immune system, such as during chemotherapy or after a transplant, can develop serious mold infections. Contact your treating doctor right away if you've had a mold exposure.

If you have asthma, keep using your prescribed inhalers and see your regular doctor for flares.

Who Provides Your Care

Mold illness evaluations are led by a licensed provider, working with our clinic director, Jose Baldazo, BSN, RN. All protocols are overseen by our medical director, Dr. Adam Parsons, MD.

We work alongside your primary care doctor, allergist or lung specialist, and we'll refer you when symptoms point to a condition that needs one.

CIRS and Mold Illness FAQs

What does CIRS stand for?

CIRS stands for chronic inflammatory response syndrome. When it's linked to mold or a water-damaged building, people often call it mold illness, biotoxin illness or CIRS-WDB.

What are the symptoms of CIRS from mold?

Fatigue, brain fog, headaches, muscle and joint aches, sinus congestion, cough, light-sensitive eyes, gut problems, numbness or tingling, night sweats and excessive thirst are common. The key feature is many symptoms in different body systems at once, often starting after a water-damage exposure.

How is CIRS diagnosed?

There's no single test. Clinicians who diagnose CIRS look for a history of exposure, symptoms in several body systems, a vision contrast sensitivity test and specific inflammation labs, after ruling out other causes. Because CIRS isn't widely recognized, your regular doctor may use different terms.

Can CIRS be cured?

We don't promise a cure. Many people improve once they're out of the exposure and their plan is followed, but recovery often takes months, and symptoms can return with new exposures. Your provider will set realistic expectations based on your history and results.

Is CIRS a real diagnosis?

Your symptoms are real. The CIRS diagnosis itself is debated. It's used by a growing number of clinicians, but most major medical organizations don't recognize it as a distinct condition, and the research comes largely from a small group. We'll explain where the evidence is strong and where it isn't.

How long does it take to recover from mold illness?

It varies widely. Some people feel better within weeks of leaving the exposure. Others take many months. How long you were exposed, whether the building is fixed and other health conditions all affect recovery.

Should I test my home for mold?

If you have symptoms and signs of water damage, such as stains, musty smells or past leaks, yes. A certified inspector can find hidden moisture, and dust tests such as ERMI or HERTSMI-2 give a picture of the building's mold load. We can explain the options.

Where can I get a mold illness evaluation in Dallas?

At Regen Wellness, 5510 Abrams Rd, Suite 126, Dallas, TX 75214, in East Dallas near Lakewood and White Rock Lake. Our services are self-pay, and many patients use HSA or FSA funds. Request our pricing sheet.
