Lyme and Tick-Borne Illness: What Helps?
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread by blacklegged ticks. Caught early, it's usually treated with a short course of antibiotics. Some people, though, have fatigue, joint and muscle pain, brain fog or poor sleep that last months after treatment, or symptoms that were never clearly diagnosed. In Texas, other tick-borne illnesses, such as ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and alpha-gal syndrome, are also common.
At Regen Wellness in Dallas, a licensed provider reviews your history and testing, looks for other causes of your symptoms, and builds a personalized plan. That plan may include coordinated medical treatment along with nutrient, sleep, gut and immune support.
Symptoms That Can Follow a Tick-Borne Illness
Lingering symptoms overlap with many other conditions, which is why a careful workup matters.
Brain Fog
Trouble concentrating, memory lapses and slower thinking.
Nerve Symptoms
Numbness, tingling, shooting pains or headaches.
Sleep & Mood
Poor sleep, anxiety and low mood.
Reactions to Red Meat
Hives, stomach pain or swelling hours after eating beef or pork can mean alpha-gal syndrome from a lone star tick bite.

Tick-Borne Illnesses in Texas
Lyme disease is less common in Texas than in the Northeast, but North Texas has several ticks that carry other illnesses. Where and when you were bitten helps point to the right tests.
| Illness | Main tick | Typical signs |
|---|---|---|
| Lyme disease | Blacklegged (deer) tick | Expanding "bull's-eye" or solid rash, fever, fatigue, joint pain. Often picked up while traveling. |
| Ehrlichiosis | Lone star tick | Fever, headache, muscle aches and low blood counts. Needs prompt antibiotics. |
| Rocky Mountain spotted fever | American dog tick and others | Fever and headache, then a spotted rash. Can be life-threatening without fast treatment. |
| Alpha-gal syndrome | Lone star tick | An allergy to red meat, with hives, stomach symptoms or anaphylaxis hours after eating it. |
| STARI | Lone star tick | A Lyme-like rash, with fatigue and mild fever. |
How We Evaluate Lingering Symptoms
Your history
Tick bites, rashes, travel, outdoor exposure, past test results and any treatment you've already had.
Tick-borne testing
Testing chosen for your history and where you were exposed. Standard Lyme blood tests can miss early infection and stay positive after it's treated, so we interpret them alongside your symptoms.
Rule out look-alikes
Thyroid problems, low iron, B12 or vitamin D, autoimmune conditions, sleep problems and mold-related illness can all cause similar symptoms.
A personalized plan
Built around what we find, and coordinated with your other doctors.
Our Approach to Lyme and Tick-Borne Illness
Every treatment plan is personalized. Depending on your diagnosis and history, it may include:
- Medical treatment when it's indicated. Active tick-borne infections are treated with antibiotics. Your provider will explain the options for your situation and coordinate with any doctors you already see.
- Correct what the labs find. Nutrient gaps, thyroid problems and other findings that add to fatigue and pain.
- Sleep, pacing and gentle movement. Managing energy so activity doesn't trigger crashes.
- Gut and immune support. Especially after antibiotics. Supplements only with a reason. Your provider will recommend specific products, and you can find the practitioner-grade options we use in the immune support collection at Regen Wellness Vitamins, our supplement store in the same suite.
- Recheck and adjust. We track symptoms and labs and change the plan as you respond.
Patients sometimes ask about IV therapy or IV ozone therapy for Lyme. These aren't proven treatments for Lyme disease, and ozone isn't FDA-approved. We'll explain what's known if you're interested.
Get Medical Care Right Away For
Fever, headache or a rash in the days or weeks after a tick bite. Rocky Mountain spotted fever and ehrlichiosis need treatment within days.
Facial drooping, a racing or skipping heartbeat, fainting, or a severe headache with a stiff neck.
Trouble breathing, throat swelling or lightheadedness after eating red meat. Call 911.
When Symptoms Last After Treatment
Roughly 5–10% of people treated for Lyme disease have fatigue, pain or brain fog that lasts six months or longer. Doctors call this post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome. "Chronic Lyme" is a broader term that's used in different ways, and there's real debate about it.
What's clearer is that long-term antibiotics haven't helped more than placebo in controlled studies and carry real risks. So for lasting symptoms, we focus on finding and treating everything else that could be contributing, and on helping you recover your energy, sleep and function.

What is a Lyme-literate doctor?
"Lyme-literate" isn't a formal credential. It usually describes a provider who has experience caring for people with ongoing symptoms after a tick-borne illness. When choosing one, ask how they test, how they decide on treatment and how they work with your other doctors.
Is there Lyme disease in Texas?
Yes, though it's much less common than in the Northeast and upper Midwest, and many Texas cases are picked up while traveling. Other tick-borne illnesses, such as ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and alpha-gal syndrome, are more common in North Texas.
How accurate is Lyme testing?
Standard two-step blood tests work well a few weeks into infection but often miss it in the first weeks, and antibodies can stay positive after successful treatment. Some specialty labs offer other tests, but not all are FDA-cleared, and results can be hard to interpret. We read any test alongside your history and symptoms.
What is chronic Lyme disease?
The term is used in different ways. Doctors widely recognize post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome, which is lasting fatigue, pain or brain fog after treatment. Whether infection persists is still debated. Either way, the symptoms are real, and we focus on helping you feel and function better.
What is alpha-gal syndrome?
An allergy to a sugar found in red meat and some other animal products, triggered by lone star tick bites, which are common in Texas. Reactions often start 2–6 hours after eating, which makes it easy to miss. A blood test can help confirm it.
Can IV ozone treat Lyme disease?
There's no good evidence that IV ozone treats Lyme disease, and ozone isn't FDA-approved for any condition. Some patients use IV therapies as general support alongside medical care. We'll explain the evidence and risks if you're interested.
