Thyroid & Hashimoto's Doctor in Dallas
A Full Thyroid Workup When "Normal" Doesn't Feel Normal
Full thyroid panels with antibodies, personalized treatment and nutrient support for Hashimoto's and underactive thyroid, from our functional medicine team in East Dallas.
What Is Hashimoto's, and How Is It Treated?
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. It's the most common cause of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) in the U.S. Common symptoms are fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, dry skin, hair thinning, constipation, brain fog, low mood and heavy or irregular periods.
Hashimoto's is diagnosed with blood tests, including thyroid antibodies, and treated with thyroid hormone when thyroid levels are low. At Regen Wellness in Dallas, we run a full thyroid panel, adjust treatment to how you feel as well as your numbers, and look at nutrients, gut health and other factors that can affect your thyroid and energy.
Signs Your Thyroid May Need a Closer Look
Thyroid symptoms come on slowly and overlap with many other conditions, so they're easy to miss or blame on age or stress.
Weight & Metabolism
Weight gain without changes in diet, feeling cold and higher cholesterol.
Weight gain & metabolism →Skin & Hair
Dry skin, brittle nails, hair thinning and loss of the outer eyebrows.
Mood & Mind
Brain fog, poor memory, low mood and anxiety.
Cycles & Fertility
Heavy or irregular periods and trouble getting pregnant.

What a Full Thyroid Panel Includes
Many checkups test TSH alone. That's a good screening test, but it doesn't show the whole picture or whether Hashimoto's is the cause.
| Test | What it shows | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| TSH | The brain's signal to the thyroid. High usually means the thyroid is underactive. | The main screening test, but it can lag behind how you feel. |
| Free T4 | The main hormone the thyroid makes | Shows how much thyroid hormone is available to your body. |
| Free T3 | The active form of thyroid hormone | Your body converts T4 to T3. Useful when symptoms don't match other results. |
| TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies | Whether the immune system is attacking the thyroid | Confirms Hashimoto's, sometimes years before thyroid levels drop. |
| Reverse T3 | An inactive form of T3 | Can rise during illness, stress or dieting. Most thyroid experts don't recommend it routinely, so we only order it when it would change your plan. |
| Related labs | Ferritin, vitamin D, B12, selenium and celiac screening | Low nutrients can cause similar symptoms, and celiac disease is more common in people with Hashimoto's. |
Taking biotin? Stop it for 2–3 days before thyroid blood work. Biotin, found in many hair, skin and nail supplements, can make thyroid results look falsely abnormal. See all our lab testing.
Thyroid Treatment Options
If your thyroid is underactive, thyroid hormone replaces what your body isn't making. We prescribe all of the options below. Your prescription is personalized: your provider explains the choices, picks the one that fits you, and adjusts the dose to your labs and how you feel.
- Levothyroxine (T4). The standard first treatment, recommended by thyroid experts. It's FDA-approved, inexpensive and works well for most people.
- Adding T3 (liothyronine). For some people who still have symptoms on T4 alone despite normal levels, current expert guidance supports a trial of T4 plus T3, with careful monitoring.
- Desiccated thyroid (such as Armour Thyroid). Made from pig thyroid and contains both T4 and T3. Some patients prefer it. It isn't FDA-approved like levothyroxine, and its T4-to-T3 ratio differs from what the human thyroid makes, so we monitor it closely.
- Hashimoto's with normal thyroid levels. If antibodies are positive but levels are normal, medication often isn't needed yet. We recheck regularly and focus on the factors below.
See a Doctor Promptly For
A lump or swelling in your neck, trouble swallowing or breathing, or a hoarse voice that doesn't go away.
A racing heart, tremor, weight loss, heat intolerance or bulging eyes. These can mean an overactive thyroid, such as Graves' disease, which needs an endocrinologist.
If you're pregnant or planning to be, tell your doctor right away. Thyroid needs change quickly in pregnancy.
Our Approach Beyond Medication
Every plan is customized. Along with thyroid hormone when you need it, most plans include:
Correct nutrient gaps
Iron, vitamin D, B12 and selenium all affect thyroid function or energy. Small studies suggest selenium may lower thyroid antibodies in some people with Hashimoto's. Supplements are personalized to your results, and your provider will recommend specific products if you need them, and you can find the practitioner-grade options we use in the thyroid and metabolic health collection at Regen Wellness Vitamins, our supplement store in the same suite.
Check for celiac disease and gut problems
Celiac disease is more common in people with Hashimoto's. A gluten-free diet is essential if you have celiac disease, and some people without it notice a difference too. We'll help you test before you cut anything out.
Be careful with iodine
Iodine is essential, but high-dose iodine supplements, including kelp, can worsen Hashimoto's in some people. Don't start them without asking your provider.
Time your medication
Take thyroid medicine on an empty stomach, and keep it apart from iron, calcium, coffee and some other supplements, which can block absorption.
Sleep, stress and recheck
We support sleep and stress, then recheck thyroid levels about 6–8 weeks after any dose change, and adjust.

What are the symptoms of Hashimoto's?
Fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, dry skin, hair thinning, constipation, brain fog, low mood and heavy periods are common. Early on, many people have no symptoms, and the condition is found through antibody testing.
Why do I still feel bad if my TSH is normal?
TSH alone doesn't show everything. Your free T4 or T3 may be low-normal, Hashimoto's may be active, or another cause, such as low iron, vitamin D or B12, sleep problems or hormone changes, may be behind your symptoms. We look at all of these.
What is reverse T3?
Reverse T3 is an inactive form of thyroid hormone that can rise during illness, stress or calorie restriction. Most thyroid experts don't find it useful for routine care, so we only order it when the result would change your treatment.
Is Armour Thyroid better than levothyroxine?
Not for most people. Levothyroxine is the standard, FDA-approved treatment. Some people who still have symptoms on levothyroxine feel better with added T3 or desiccated thyroid such as Armour. Your provider can talk through the pros and cons with you.
Can Hashimoto's be reversed?
Hashimoto's usually can't be cured, but it can be well managed. Some people see antibody levels fall with nutrient repletion and diet changes, but that isn't guaranteed, and many people need thyroid hormone long term.
What is the best diet for Hashimoto's?
There's no single proven diet. A balanced, mostly whole-food diet with enough selenium and iron is a good base. A gluten-free diet is necessary if you also have celiac disease. Some people try an elimination diet with guidance.
